Occasionally in the late autumn after the evening thunderstorm clouds have dispersed, an extraordinarily beautiful mellow light descends upon the hilltops around Castlemaine. It is there for just a few moments and then gone. Richard Batterham, English potter, speaks of patience. 'The main work is not to make the pots, but to allow them to come, to allow them to grow, allow them to be alive… like the light.
