PRUE VENABLES

Motivated by a particular interest in functional objects and a search for simplicity, quietness and an essential stillness, I make objects that are pared back, serene and deceptively simple. Technical expertise, invention and a diversity of references here gently recede, allowing forms to stand innocently and for details and spaces between objects to reflect musical rhythm and even a quiet pause for breath.

Born Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Initial training, Harrow Diploma of Studio Pottery, London, 1983. Significant collections include: National Gallery of Australia, All State and Territory Galleries. Awards include: 2014, Finalist, Officine Saffi Project, Milan, Italy; 2011, Australia Council Skills and Arts Development; 2007, HM WOCEF, Korea; President Craft Victoria; 2006, Elected Fellow Royal Society of Arts, UK; 2003, Third Prize, Jan Ken Pon, World Design Competition; 2002, HM, International Ceramics Competition, Mino, Japan; 1995, Premier Award, Fletcher Challenge Ceramics Award.
